Spinal Flow Technique: Gentle Healing & support for ADHD and the Role of Holistic Trauma Release in Hampshire

When we think of our children’s health, we often focus on nutrition, vaccinations, exercise, play, and sleep, but what about the more subtle and foundational layers of nervous system regulation, trauma release, and the impact of going undiagnosed or being in the wrong educational setting for children with ADHD?   Spinal Flow Technique is a gentle, complementary bodywork and energy based therapy that can offer profound benefits for children with ADHD, especially those who have been struggling in School and finding it difficult to attend School, and even more so if they find it difficult to speak or articulate themselves, or do not quite understand the impact of being undiagnosed or in the wrong educational setting for so long.  This therapy is especially helpful when integrated into a more holistic naturopathic health care journey that recognises trauma (both large and small “T” events) as the potential root cause of health issues including worsening symptoms of nervous system dysregulation, focus, concentration, mood balance, poor gut health and sleep issues.

Our understanding of how early stress and trauma impacts long-term wellbeing continues to grow but the statistics so far link past trauma’s and stresses, whether recognised or not to long term health issues.

Spinal Flow Technique offers an approach that honours emotional and neurological needs for the whole family from your youngest members, right up to the eldest.

What is Spinal Flow?

Spinal Flow is a technique involving very gentle touch along the spine, sacrum, head/neck, and other key access points.  Spinal Flow practitioners aim to identify and release “spinal blockages” or areas of tension or restriction, whether from physical, emotional, chemical, or developmental stresses.  It’s non‑invasive, often calming, and is said to support the body’s innate ability to self‑regulate and heal.  There are a number of spinal flow practitioners throughout the Country but at our Surrey based Naturopathic Medicine clinic near Hampshire we like to recommend patients to Jane Stredder at Petersfield Spinal flow in Hampshire.

Benefits of Spinal Flow Technique for Children with ADHD

Spinal Flow technique may help with:

  • Supporting nervous system regulation: reducing fight/flight stress, helping with emotional regulation, anxiety, and general overstimulation
  • Improving sleep and digestion
  • Boosting immune function: because stress and tension along the nervous system can impact immune responsiveness and drive inflammation
  • Helping posture, alignment, growth: by releasing spinal restrictions that might interfere with healthy physical development
  • Enhancing mind body awareness: helping your child tune into their body, calming emotional responses, and building resilience in processing small stresses

Because Spinal Flow therapy interacts directly with the nervous system, it helps create safety within the body, which is an essential step in holistic trauma release and ADHD management.

What is “Small T” Trauma & Why It Matters

Trauma isn’t only what we often think of as big dramatic events (accidents, abuse, disasters). There are many smaller, repeated, or subtle stressors known as “small T” traumas, that also accumulate.  These can include:

  • Harsh or critical speech, relational neglect
  • Bullying
  • Repeated minor emotional stressors
  • Frequent exposure to conflict
  • Physical discomfort or stress over time
  • Parents divorcing
  • Moving house and moving away from friends at a young age
  • Not feeling like you fit it or are different from your peers
  • Struggling academically but not really getting the support you need
  • Being punished for not having the correct colour pen, for lack of organisation, for not be able to sit still or for being 2 minutes late for a lesson (all ADHD based struggles).

These may not meet thresholds for formal trauma diagnosis initially, but research increasingly shows the cumulative effect of small T’s and the role they play in later ill health.

Some relevant statistics from UK / related international research:

  • In a large UK cohort, 31.1% of young people reported trauma exposure by age 18.
  • PTSD prevalence by age 18 in that group was ~7.8%, and in those exposed to trauma, ~25%.
  • For children aged 11‑17 in the UK, about 21.9% had experienced one or more forms of abuse or neglect by a parent/caregiver during childhood.
  • Around 18.6% of children experience some form of abuse or neglect (i.e. complex trauma factors) in UK community samples.
  • Those with past trauma including small Ts had a 38% increased risk of a cardiovascular event in later life, 58% increased risk of an auto-immune disease, had a higher prevalence of alcohol and drug abuse, and an increased risk of obesity and suicidal thoughts.

These numbers aren’t directly linked to children with ADHD but correlation can be implied using a degree of common sense based on their experiences in the current mainstream School system and lack of SEND funding across the UK in general.

How Spinal Flow Technique Can Help Release Trauma in Children

Spinal Flow offers a gentle way for children to release stored stress and tension, even if they cannot fully articulate emotional or psychological distress. Here’s how:

  • By releasing physical tension along the spine and nervous system, it helps shift out of fight/flight states, allowing children to access rest, repair, digestion
  • By calming nervous system overload, helping reduce anxiety, improve sleep, improve digestion
  • Supporting attachment, security, safety: children who feel safe in their bodies tend to feel safer in relationships and environments

Integration with a Naturopathic Health Journey near Hampshire

Spinal Flow Technique doesn’t need to be stand alone, in fact it works especially well when woven into a broader naturopathic functional medicine framework.  Here’s how it can be integrated for more holistic care:

Assessment & Root‑Cause Mapping:
In naturopathic nutrition, we assess diet, sleep, digestion, metabolic, immune function, lifestyle, stress, anxiety and more, and part of this process involves recognising if emotional or trauma‑based stressors might be at the root of the matter.  In fact, at our clinic near Hampshire we find that emotional or stress based traumas are often one the underlying root causes in the majority of patient cases, even when the patient themself does not recognise it, and this is when spinal flow technique can be added to your health care journey to support the healing process holistically.

Nutrition & Biochemistry Stabilisation:
Good nutrition, gut health, balancing inflammation, supporting hormones and detoxification help the body have capacity to heal, and when the body is less taxed, trauma release work like Spinal Flow technique tends to be more effective and safer.

Lifestyle, Sleep & Stress Hygiene:
Supporting sleep and buffering stress with the right nutrients and herbal solutions provides a container in which Spinal Flow technique can do its work.

Why This Combination Matters

  • Many conventional approaches treat symptoms without addressing the layers underneath.  Trauma (even small “T”) may be driving inflammation, immune imbalance, hormone dysregulation, digestive issues, and mood management, so why would you ignore the underlying issues if they exist.
  • Addressing the physical body (spine/nervous system) through Spinal Flow technique and the biochemical body through naturopathic nutrition you can produce deeper, more lasting change.
  • For children, early intervention is especially powerful as there’s more plasticity and greater opportunity to change trajectory before patterns solidify.

Conclusion

Spinal Flow technique offers a compassionate, gentle, body aware way to help children, especially those with ADHD to release both physical and emotional tension.  When trauma, whether “big T” or “small t” is part of the picture, integrating Spinal Flow technique into a naturopathic nutrition and functional medicine framework at our clinic near Hampshire we can uncover all root causes rather than just treating the symptoms and instead offer our patients a truly holistic approach.
