In this blog, Surrey and Sussex leading Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist and Functional Medicine Test expert Natalie @NatNutHC, discusses Natural medicine tools including Nootropics and Adaptogens for ADHD and mood management.

As a naturopathic nutritional therapist and functional medicine test expert, I often see clients in my Surrey and Sussex based clinic looking for natural medicine support with issues like low mood, anxiety, ADHD symptoms, sleep struggles, and hormone related mood issues during perimenopause, PMS and adolescent puberty for example.

In addition, I also see these mood related issues pop up in many chronic illnesses from chronic fatigue syndrome to polymyalgia and cancers.  If not addressed these mood related issues via the hypothalamus pituitary adrenal (HPA) Axis and the hormone cortisol play back into the disease cycle and drive chronic illness in a continuous cycle.  Subsequently I therefore often use nootropics and adaptogens in my natural medicine clinic to support many patients, whether they originally came to me for ADHD and Mood management or not, why?  Because as a Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist I am always looking to support the root of someone’s illness and if nervous system dysregulation and stress isn’t dealt with, then anything else I do to support them will only ever be a sticking plaster!

In this post, we’ll explore:

  • What nootropics are and how they differ from adaptogenic herbs
  • Which nootropics support mood, ADHD, anxiety, sleep, and perimenopause
  • What the clinical trials say and can they replace medication?
  • When these tools can help, and when they might not be enough on their own

What Are Nootropics and Adaptogens?

Nootropics are substances, natural or synthetic, that are used to enhance brain performance, including:

  • Memory
  • Focus and attention
  • Mental clarity
  • Learning and processing speed

They are sometimes called “cognitive enhancers.” But they don’t only support thinking, they often have benefits for mood, motivation, and sleep, too.

How Are Nootropics Different from Adaptogens?

These two categories often get mixed up, but they have different primary goals:

  • Nootropics focus on enhancing brain function including memory, focus, or creativity.
  • Adaptogens help the body adapt to stress by balancing the nervous system and hormones like cortisol.

That said, many natural substances (like Rhodiola or Ashwagandha) fall into both categories, which is where the overlap happens.

Key Nootropics used in my Surrey and Sussex based Natural Medicine clinics

Here are some of the most well-studied and widely used natural medicine nootropics that also support mental health, sleep, and hormone balance.

Saffron (Crocus sativus)

  • Known for its rich red colour and unique aroma.
  • Used traditionally as a spice.
  • Shown in studies to:
    • Improve mood and symptoms of depression
    • Help with ADHD symptoms
    • Support sleep onset and reduce anxiety
  • It works by modulating serotonin and dopamine levels.
  • It also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
  • In particular, Saffron (particularly standardised extracts) has shown results comparable to Ritalin (methylphenidate) in children with ADHD.

Medicinal Mushrooms

Lion’s Mane Mushroom (Hericium erinaceus)

  • Supports nerve cell growth and regeneration
  • May improve:
    • Memory and focus
    • Anxiety and mood
    • Sleep quality
    • Also acts as a prebiotic and helps to heal the GUT lining.  This in turn supports the GUT-Brain Axis connection, which plays a pivotal role in mental health.  See our other blogs on the Gut-Brain-Axis.

Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum)

  • Traditionally used for longevity, and immune support, but can also help to:
    • Reduce anxiety and depression symptoms
    • Improve sleep
    • Improve overall wellbeing (especially in chronic illness or perimenopause)
    • Can also be used to lower blood glucose levels

Other Natural Nootropics

  • Bacopa monnieri – Enhances memory and reduces mental fatigue.
  • Rhodiola rosea – Acts as both an adaptogen and nootropic; supports energy, stress resilience, and mental clarity.
  • Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) – Calms anxiety, supports hormone balance, and improves sleep.  Can also boost immune function, but consequently is therefore not recommended in auto-immune disease.
  • Panax ginseng – Boosts mental energy and focus.
  • L-theanine – Found in green tea; promotes calm, alert focus and reduces anxiety without sedation.

How Nootropics and Adaptogens Can Help Specific Conditions

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

  • Saffron has been studied both on its own and as an add-on to Ritalin:
    • In children/adolescents, saffron showed results comparable to methylphenidate, with better sleep outcomes.
    • In adults, saffron added to Ritalin improved symptoms more than Ritalin alone.
  • Lion’s Mane and Rhodiola may support focus, reduce anxiety, and improve attention.

Caution:  Some herbs, such as Rhodiola can interact with patients existing medications.  Therefore, always seek advice from a fully qualified and insured nutritional therapist before supplementing with nootropics and adaptogens.

Mood & Anxiety Support

  • Saffron has been shown in multiple trials to improve mild to moderate depression, with fewer side effects than antidepressants.
  • Reishi mushroom improved anxiety, depression, and overall vitality in college students in a 30-day trial.
  • Lion’s Mane mushroom and Ashwagandha both support mood, lower cortisol, and reduce anxiety symptoms.
  • L-theanine promotes a calm focus, useful for social anxiety or overthinking.

Caution:  Some nootropics, such as Rhodiola, Reishi and Ashwagandha can interact with patients existing medications.  Therefore, always seek advice from a fully qualified and insured nutritional therapist before supplementing with nootropics and adaptogens.

Sleep Quality

  • Reishi mushroom is traditionally used as a calming mushroom for sleep and relaxation.
  • Saffron helped children with ADHD fall asleep faster than those taking Ritalin alone.
  • Ashwagandha helps improve sleep onset, duration, and quality, especially when stress is a factor.

Caution:  Some nootropics, such as Reishi and Ashwagandha can interact with patients existing medications.  Therefore always seek advice from a fully qualified and insured nutritional therapist before supplementing with nootropics and adaptogens.  In addition, Reishi can also lower blood pressure, so seek professional support if you suffer from low blood pressure or are already taking anti-hypertensive medications.

Perimenopause and other Hormone Support

During perimenopause, PMS and adolescent puberty fluctuating hormones can lead to mood swings, anxiety, poor sleep, brain fog and low motivation, but these symptoms are exacerbated by stress and poor diet.

Natural nootropics and adaptogens like Reishi, Lion’s Mane, Ashwagandha, and Rhodiola, alongside dietary and other hormone balancing techniques can help ease symptoms of  anxiety, mood disturbances and sleep issues.

Can Nootropics Replace Medication?

Sometimes yes, and sometimes no.  It really depends on each individual, which is why at my natural medicine clinic @natnuthc I practice personalised healthcare and never apply a one size fits all solution.  However, often one thing is clear, they offer a powerful supportive role, especially in mild depression or anxiety, mild ADHD symptoms, sleep and stress related issues, and for those preferring a natural approach.

However, they may not be enough in severe depression and anxiety, complex ADHD with executive function deficits, significant perimenopausal or PMS symptoms and when immediate symptom control is critical.

In my natural medicine clinic, I often utilise nootropics and adaptogens to provide an additional layer of support to clients, in particular I find:

  • L-theanine to be a great add onto ADHD stimulant medication, and can help blunt the affect the over-stimulation the medications sometimes cause.
  • Lions Mane and Reishi mushrooms great at supporting Perimenopausal women especially when there are signs of increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut) and potential issues with blood sugar management.
  • Reishi mushroom to support Perimenopause and healthy ageing.
  • Saffron for mild to moderate depression.

Caution: always consult with a doctor or qualified nutritional therapist before making medication changes or taking nootropics and adaptogens when you are already taking a prescribed medication.

Can Nootropics Help Reduce Side Effects of ADHD Meds?

Yes, in some cases. For example:

  • Saffron improved ADHD symptoms and sleep in children taking Ritalin.
  • Reishi may help with anxiety and overstimulation caused by stimulants.
  • L-theanine can reduce jitteriness and help smooth out focus.

In my natural medicine clinic, I often use nootropics and adaptogens to enhance or balance stimulant medications rather than replace them entirely.

Summary: Where Nootropics and Adaptogens Fit

Here’s what we know:

  • Saffron, Reishi, and Lion’s Mane show real promise for mood, ADHD, sleep, and stress.
  • Nootropics and adaptogens may not fully replace medication, but they can:
    • Reduce side effects
    • Support long term brain health
    • Offer a gentler option for mild cases
  • For perimenopause, PMS and adolescent puberty nootropics and adaptogens can help ease transition, especially when symptoms are mild to moderate.
  • However, many nootropics and adaptogens can interact with an individual’s medications, thus professional support from a fully qualified and insured nutritional therapist should always be sought.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for natural ways to support ADHD and Mood Management, nootropics and adaptogens may offer powerful tools, especially when combined with functional testing, personalised health care, nutrition, and lifestyle medicine changes.

As always, work with a qualified practitioner to ensure you’re getting the right support for your personal needs and to ensure you are not taking any risks that may impact your medication.
