Surrey naturopathic nutritional therapist and functional medicine test expert Natalie from @natnuthc discusses the hidden dangers of calorie counting.

In today’s world, we are constantly told to track our calories to maintain a healthy weight and improve our well-being.  Calorie counting has become a mainstream strategy, however while it can certainly be effective in the short term for weight loss, many naturopathic nutritional therapists argue that it is not the healthiest or most effective approach for long-term health.

In fact, calorie restriction can deplete essential nutrients, disrupt metabolic processes, and can contribute to a range of negative health effects, including weight gain, fatigue, inflammation and hormone imbalances.

In this blog, Surrey naturopathic nutritional therapist Natalie @natnuthc, takes a deep dive into the biological and scientific impacts of calorie restriction and why focusing on nutrient dense foods, rather than just calorie counting can be a game changer for your health, metabolism, and long term weight management.

Nutrient Depletion and Vital Nutrient Deficiencies

One of the biggest downsides of calorie counting is that it often leads to nutrient depletion. When you focus primarily on reducing calories, you may inadvertently remove whole, nutrient dense foods that are essential for your body’s optimal function. This can lead to deficiencies in critical vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats.

For example, key nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish, flaxseeds, nuts and seeds like walnuts, pecan nuts, and sunflower seeds for example) and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K are vital for immune function, skin health, cognitive function, and the absorption of calcium for bone health.  In addition, choline rich foods (eggs) are essential for DNA synthesis and repair, as well as lipid digestion via bile production.

Fats are also essential for our brain health, our cellular membrane and for hormone synthesis.

When calorie counting leads to a reduction in any of these vital nutrients, it can impair overall health, cause dysfunctional metabolism and immune function and can lead to all sorts of health complaints associated with thyroid function, energy metabolism, lipid digestion, cognition, inflammation and so much more.

The Role of Healthy Fats: Inflammatory Fats vs. Quality Saturated Fats

Another concern with calorie counting is the potential over emphasis on low fat diets.  Often, calorie conscious individuals substitute healthy fats with inflammatory vegetable oils (like sunflower, rapeseed, canola or soybean oil), which can harm your health long term. These oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which, when consumed in excess, can promote inflammation in the body.  The molecular structure of these oils is also changed when they are heated.  The molecular change they go through during the heating process makes them rigid and when these rigid fats embed in our cellular membranes, they can disrupt the ability of the cells to function and thus can lead to issues with energy metabolism, mitochondrial dysfunction, thyroid dysfunction and this can ultimately lead to poor health and weight gain.

In contrast, quality saturated fats, such as those found in coconut oil, grass-fed butter, and fatty cuts of meat, as well as raw healthy plant based fats such as those found in olive oil, nuts, seeds and avocado are essential for healthy cell membranes, energy production, and metabolism. These fats also play a crucial role in the absorption of fat soluble vitamins including A, D, E and K all of which are essential for immune function, bone health and fighting against oxidative stress which can lead to damage and mutated cells.  Limiting these fats in an effort to reduce calories can lead to long term damage to cellular health, impair mitochondrial function, and disrupt energy metabolism.

At our Surrey Naturopathic Nutrition clinic, we regularly see clients with inflammatory based conditions from cancers to auto-immune disease and the majority of them have a history of calorie counting, fat restriction, and yoyo dieting!  Our job is to help them reset their metabolism and rebuild healthy cellular function.

Metabolic Slowdown and Disrupted Thyroid Function

A major issue with calorie restriction is the negative effect it can have on metabolic function, particularly the thyroid.  The thyroid is a crucial gland that regulates metabolism through the production of thyroid hormones like T3 and T4.  When calorie intake is drastically reduced over an extended period, the body perceives this as a state of “starvation,” triggering a decrease in thyroid hormone production as a survival mechanism so the body ‘stores and reserves’ ready essential for a famine!

This metabolic slowdown can result in fatigue, weight gain, and difficulty losing fat.  The reduction in thyroid hormone levels leads to a slower metabolic rate, meaning the body burns fewer calories at rest.  This can create a vicious cycle where people eat even fewer calories to compensate, further slowing metabolism and promoting fat storage as the body goes even deeper into survival mechanism.

The Impact on Mitochondrial Function and Energy Production

Mitochondria, the powerhouses of our cells, rely on a steady supply of nutrients to produce energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate).  Our bodies rely on ATP molecules to undertake every single biological process, from fat digestion, to nutrient absorption, to hormone production and immune cell creation.  When we are starved of key nutrients or are eating inflammatory oils (those heated oils discussed above!) instead of healthy fats this, over time, can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction, which manifests as chronic fatigue, decreased endurance, and impaired overall energy metabolism.  When the body isn’t getting enough of the right nutrients, the mitochondria become less efficient at converting food into usable energy, leaving you feeling sluggish and low on energy.  This can also put the body into survival mode and cause it to promote fat storage.

At our Surrey Naturopathic Nutrition clinic, we regularly see clients who have been suffering from fatigue and mitochondrial dysfunction and one thing they generally all have in common, is a history of calorie counting, fat restriction and yoyo dieting!  Our job is to help them nourish their mitochondria to restore cellular health and optimal metabolism.

Hormonal Imbalances and Reproductive Health

Healthy fats are also crucial for hormonal health.  Hormones like oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are synthesised from fats, and a deficiency in dietary fats can lead to imbalances in these hormones.  For women, calorie restriction can disrupt the menstrual cycle, leading to irregular periods or even amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation), which is often a sign of hormone imbalance.

For both men and women, prolonged calorie restriction can lead to thyroid dysfunction, adrenal fatigue, and imbalances in cortisol, the stress hormone. These hormone imbalances can affect mood, energy levels, libido, and reproductive health.

Sustained Energy Levels vs. Blood Sugar Spikes

One of the key problems with calorie counting is that it often encourages the consumption of low calorie, highly processed foods that are devoid of essential nutrients.  These foods, such as refined grains and sugars (think low fat cereal bars for example) are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, causing rapid blood sugar spikes and crashes, which also impact dopamine fluctuations.  This means individuals, essentially get a high from the sugar/dopamine hit and then they come crashing down and crave more of the refined grains and sugar that created the high in the first place.

This also leads to fluctuations in energy levels, leaving you feeling tired, and then hungry shortly after eating.  Instead, focus on nutrient dense whole foods such as healthy fats, high quality proteins, and fibre rich vegetables, which provide sustained energy without the blood sugar rollercoaster.  This balanced approach helps prevent energy dips, reduces cravings, and promotes lean muscle growth and overall health and mental well-being.

Gut Health and Nutrient Absorption – the Surrey Naturopathic Nutrition Method!

Healthy fats are not just important for energy; they also play a critical role in gut health.  Fats are essential for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E, and K.  Without sufficient fat intake, you may not be absorbing these vitamins properly, leading to deficiencies that impact your immune system, skin, bones, and even your brain.

Additionally, consuming adequate fat helps support the integrity of the intestinal lining, promoting a healthy gut microbiome and aiding in digestion.  Calorie restricted diets that limit fat intake can lead to compromised gut function, which can contribute to digestive discomfort and nutrient malabsorption.

Psychological Health and Eating Disorders – the Surrey Naturopathic Nutrition Method!

Focusing on calorie counting can also take a toll on your mental and emotional health. Constantly tracking calories can create an unhealthy relationship with food, leading to stress, anxiety, and disordered eating patterns.  This can promote a cycle of guilt and shame around eating, rather than fostering a positive, intuitive approach to healthy eating.

Often those that may give you advise on calorie counting are not trained therapists and may not be aware of how to identify potential red flags that hint at a possible disordered eating pattern or other mental instability where support from a psychological therapist may be warranted.

At our Surrey Naturopathic Nutrition clinic, we regularly see clients who either have or are suspected of having disordered eating patterns, and we also see many clients who have no idea they have an unhealthy relationship with food.  Unfortunately, this unhealthy relationship with food often stems from misinformation in the public domain about calorie counting and restrictive diets.

At our Surrey Naturopathic Nutrition clinic, we are trained to identify suspected disordered eating patterns.  We also work collaboratively with a clinical psychologist Dr Vikki Kelly and thus can refer you for additional support if necessary.  This ensures you get holistic care to thoroughly support your needs.

We also help you understand the importance of healthy food and nourishing the body, and work with you over time to support your transition towards a better relationship with food.  We help encourage a balanced approach where the focus is on nourishment rather than restriction.  By listening to your body’s hunger cues and focusing on the quality of your food, you can break free from the diet mentality and cultivate a healthier, more sustainable way of eating and look forward to a more sustainable way of managing your weight long term.

Long Term Health Risks of Chronic Calorie Restriction

Over time, chronic calorie restriction can have a serious impact on your long term health. Studies have shown that calorie restriction, especially when it involves nutrient deprived foods, can increase the risk of bone loss, cognitive decline, and heart disease.

Additionally, prolonged calorie restriction can impair immune function, making the body more susceptible to illness and infection.  A balanced approach to nutrition, which includes healthy fats, proteins, and a variety of nutrient dense whole foods, supports long term health and vitality.

Conclusion – the Surrey Naturopathic Nutrition Method!

While calorie counting may seem like a straightforward and quick fix solution to weight loss, it often leads to nutrient depletion, metabolic slowdown, hormonal imbalances, and psychological stress, which long term can actually lead to weight gain and difficulties losing weight.  Instead of focusing on calories, a more holistic approach, emphasising nutrient dense, whole foods can support your thyroid, metabolism, and overall well-being.

By prioritising healthy fats, such as omega-3s, quality saturated fats, raw plant based healthy fats with nuts, seeds and avocado’s and by avoiding inflammatory oils, you can support cellular health, improve mitochondrial function, and sustain energy levels.  A balanced diet based on whole, nourishing foods will help you achieve long term health goals without the negative consequences of calorie restriction.

At our Surrey Naturopathic Nutrition clinic, we regularly see clients from Surrey and Sussex including Epsom, Worcester Park, Fetcham and Hove who have been suffering from fatigue and mitochondrial dysfunction, immune irregularities, inflammation, hormone imbalance and difficulty losing weight (despite trying so hard and staying active in the gym) and one thing they generally all have in common, is a history of calorie counting, fat restriction and yoyo dieting!  Our approach is to focus on healing their cellular health, rebuilding and resetting their metabolism, and ensuring they are consuming and absorbing all the key nutrients their body needs to undertake healthy and optimal DNA synthesis and repair.  It’s not a quick fix, but with consistency it works and changes lives forever!

Remember: Health isn’t just about numbers, it’s about nourishment.  Choose food that fuels your body and supports your overall well-being.  This is also true of the scales, as they don’t know the difference between fat and muscle weight!
