- 4-OH Oestrogen and 16α-OH Oestrogen: In contrast, 4-OH oestrogen and 16α-OH oestrogen are considered “bad” oestrogen metabolites; they promote cell proliferation, inflammation, and oxidative stress, increasing the risk of hormone dependent cancers.
However, it doesn’t stop there, because each of the different oestrogen metabolites are detoxified via different liver pathways. For example, 2-OH and 4-OH are processed via methylation, while 16-OH via a pathway known as sulphation. Each of these liver pathways depends upon different nutrients to work optimally, while in addition different genetic profiles may or may not handle these pathways effectively. - Cruciferous Vegetables: vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussel sprouts contain a compound known as Indole-3-Carbonol (I3C), which can upregulate the 2-OH oestrogen pathway.
- Other sources include: parsley, celery, chamomile tea and certain herbs such as dong quai, black cohash, red clover.
